The honest reason I still eat meat is because I am too anemic. I need the iron. If I found a way to reliably get iron without eating meat I would. I have anxiety every time I cook meat because I don't want salmonella or anything like that.

I work directly with the homeless population, and it is a far more complicated issue than just a lack of homes. There are so many variables that contribute to homelessness. Mental health and substance abuse are far bigger contributors than lack of homes. We’re also seeing a lot more elderly homelessness due to being on a fixed income and their cost of living increases do not match the skyrocketing rent.

Hi! Atheist-raised-muslim from Egypt here! In Muslim countries, we're actually having our four beef days as I write this! This is not to say that we don't eat beef on other days, but the four days of Adha are when absolutely EVERYONE eats beef, all social and economic levels. I wish we can make those days the only days anyone from the community eats beef. That'd be such a huge change, and I wouldn't say it's undoable.

On the topic of community and farms being used for someone’s livelihood… according to this USDA study from 2022 a fully 71% of farmland is held on just 9% of all farms… massive industrial agriculture is not benefitting individual people and is a profit driven economy that works off poor immigrant labor. The people who own these farms are actively working to undermine the same “social technologies” that build community Hank is talking about, except where it aligns with their goals (business friendly voting blocks leaning more conservative, nuclear family centric, and christian evangelical). The only thing ~really~ wrong about the Applebee's/Dr. Pepper scene: Applebee's, as a chain, carries Pepsi-Cola. products, which means they don't actually carry Dr. Pepper! Should've been fact checked. HOWEVER, I only know this because Dr. Pepper is, indeed, my favorite. It's a sad Dr. Pepperless day when we go to Applebee's. haha nice rant. there is a solution that is part of our species, but we forgot, variety. if we eat something different every day of the week, we'll eat less of everything. if we take our power from different sources, depending on our financial possibilities, we could limit the damage of fossil fuel. if we can afford it maybe put a wee panel on our house or we could give part of our wealth to research that tech that we need. people suck yes, but maybe they just lack the information. and so hank and all you science guys on the internet, i'm with you, we can do it. slowly but surely😉 the problem is that our monkey brain is too slow to adapt to progress and changes. we go too fast and we should change too fast for our own understanding. the human paradox.

i eat beef because i have been made to feel like i'd be missing out if i didn't. its a sad admission but its true. the FOMO-driven wannabe society has me in its clutches, but every time i switch out beef for something else i am reducing the power of that voice that says 'look, you could be living like kings, but you're depriving yourself of the good shit'

One bit of this video that genuinely filled me with optimism is the bit about the internet, and how it represents a 'table flip' of society. Ten years ago, if you'd asked me, I would've said that the internet getting wider adoption was just *good*. The world would be more connected than ever, technological progress would go faster and be more widely, freely, and fairly accessible, and with everybody online there'd be more more empathy for others. The past five or ten years have been nothing but hit after hit against those ideas; to me, it feels really tough to be optimistic about the impact that the internet is having on modern society... But hey, it's been like, fifteen years, *maybe* twenty if we're being super generous, that the internet has really been a part of mainstream society. That's *nothing* on the scale of societal change. Maybe we just haven't worked out the needed social technologies to use the internet in healthier ways yet, and maybe we will! It suddenly feels like there might be a way out, there might be a way that things can get better.

I know this was supposed to be inspirational, and it is, at least somewhat. But for me it is also hugely heartbreaking. It makes me nihilistic. It’s a big reason, if not the reason, why I’ve never had a child. It just feels all so pointless to all but guarantee the suffering of future generations by creating them.

For me not eating beef is perfectly normal. I never ate beef regularly. I've had a few hamburgers (Could count them on one hand) throughout my life. It's because back in the 90s there was a big scare about Mad Cow Disease. My family just... never bought beef. Always pork or chicken... I'm helping?

Sorry but you need to check deeper into your facts. It appears that you are cherry picking data to disprove a view, such as we need more homes so the price is high because of that. There are over 12 million homes in the USA that are nor inhabited and around 800,000 homeless. It is not a shortage of homes, it's the greed of landlords who can make more money by leaving units empty or undeveloped to create the supply shortage that you are talking about. With the rent - vs - income graphs, you could have shown the real graph that you believe to be accurate. I would suggest that the divergence may be less extreme in rate it will be just as devastating to someone trying to live in America. You have a huge platform, myself included. Please don't throw out opinions disguised as facts as many people believe what they hear from people they respect.

This is going be very cynical and dark, but -- as we have seen with the COVID pandemic -- the only thing that will make people stop eating beef quickly is if there is an American Mad Cow pandemic that makes the idea of eating meat literally dangerous and risky. Given how lenient regulation is in the U.S. about beef quality as time goes on, it's a matter of when, not if, that will happen.. which is awful because many many lives will be lost, but as I get older, people fight harder and harder to not change things in their lives, and care less and less about everyone and everything else. Sigh. OK, I feel better, time for some vegan jerky!

Maybe you're already aware of this, but I did want to point out that scientists largely agree that limiting climate change to 1.5C is impossible even if we hit net zero today. That being said, beef days are a great idea! In fact, the more impossible 1.5 C or 2 C targets become, the more necessary ideas like this will become.

I'd make 1 or 2 of those days on holidays when you're already going to eat it, just to make it easier to celebrate with people who are eating it anyway. The 4th of July comes to mind.

I changed my diet to healthy vegan one a few years ago for purely selfish reasons. Research shows it's the diet with the longest lifespans and healthspans. I want other people to switch for selfish reasons too. I want more healthy vegan options at the restaurants I visit. I intellectually know a vegan diet is the best diet for the planet, society, and the animals but none of that was as motivating as me just waning to be as healthy as possible for as long as possible. If some of you order more vegan options at all my favorite restaurants, I'd appreciate it 😅 Thanks!

Cows are not the problem. 100% of the carbon in a cow came from a plant less than 5 years ago and 100% of the carbon in those plants came from the atmosphere a year or two before that. Agriculture is a closed loop.
